Boat Hut Insight
While the SPX Johnson L4000 is built tough and designed for heavy duty use, one thing to consider is the location of your bilge pump installation. Because this pump is liquid cooled and has a relatively high amp draw at 15 Amp, it’s worth investing in a dedicated battery or circuit to avoid draining your main battery during extended use. Also, the removable check valve is a great feature, but regular maintenance checks are essential—bilge pumps often save your boat in emergencies, and a stuck valve or clogged hose can turn a lifesaver into a liability. Lastly, if you’re upgrading from a smaller pump, double-check your hose fittings and routing to ensure the 1 1/2″ or 2″ connections fit your setup without awkward bends, which can reduce flow efficiency.
